As you may have heard, the CDC announced new rules in January 2021. The big one everyone is talking about is the requirement to show proof of a negative COVID-19 viral test to re-enter the United States (effective January 26, 2021). Nick Fong wants to know what this means and how Los Cabos is preparing for these new CDC travel regulations.
Nick Fong, founder of Ronival Real Estate, joins Rodrigo Esponda—Managing Director of the Los Cabos Tourism Board—to ask crucial questions about the latest CDC travel rules and traveler testing in Los Cabos.
If you’re traveling to Mexico soon—specifically to Baja California Sur and Los Cabos—this guide shows how to get your COVID-19 test before returning to the U.S. For a refresher on local beaches and safety tips, check out our guides to Medano Beach and safe beaches in Los Cabos.
Getting your COVID-19 viral test in Los Cabos
Rodrigo shares that the Los Cabos International Airport and many major resorts offer on-site viral testing. In addition, Ronival Real Estate agents and Property Management by Ronival can help coordinate testing for guests and owners.
Nick notes many of his clients are physicians and asks if they can perform their own tests. Rodrigo answers yes—as long as they are qualified and documentation meets CDC requirements.
Approximate cost for antigen testing starts around $35 USD (≈ 700 MXN), with some hotels including testing in the room rate. As testing capacity scales, prices are expected to decrease. For official U.S. guidance, see the CDC’s page on testing for international air travelers and the U.S. Embassy’s Mexico COVID-19 information.
Two accepted COVID-19 viral test options
Your test result must be documented by a medical professional and include all CDC-required personal and provider details. The certificate must:
- List your full name and date of birth (matching your travel ID)
- Identify the test type performed and the negative result
- Show the provider’s name and license/credentials
- Be issued in English (or accompanied by an English translation)
- Show the collection date/time within 72 hours prior to departure for the U.S.
PCR (NAAT) test — the “gold standard”
PCR detects viral genetic material and can identify infection even in asymptomatic cases. It’s processed on lab equipment and commonly offered at hospitals, clinics, some hotels, and mobile/at-home services.
Antigen (rapid) test — faster and widely accepted
Antigen tests detect viral proteins and return results quickly, making them ideal for pre-travel screening. Many hotels and clinics in Los Cabos provide same-day antigen testing that meets CDC rules for return travel.
