Nick Fong’s interview with Colleen Carroll
Colleen Carroll mentions to Nick Fong that although she lives in Hood River, Oregon, she loves to travel a bit. So Nick asks her to describe what it means to be a professional kiteboarder. She responds by telling Nick that over the last 10 years, she has built her professional kiteboarding career. During that time, she has gained some great sponsors and traveled to many amazing places for kiteboarding competitions, photo shoots, and video shoots.
Along with kiteboarding competitions, Colleen Carroll has hosted some exciting women’s kiteboarding retreats and kiteboarding clinics. She loves sharing her experience with others! Talking with Nick, she says that she’s put together a “pretty cool career” all on her own.
Ever since the COVID-19 pandemic began, Colleen’s kiteboarding career was put on pause. Fortunately, she was ready to explore new things and diversify. As such, she decided to get into real estate, along with her kiteboarding career. Today, she’s part of the Ronival Real Estate team working with buyers drawn to ocean-view lifestyle communities such as Cabo Del Sol and other premier areas of Los Cabos.
Discover Colleen Carroll’s story
Colleen Carroll grew up in the Northwest Region of the USA, planted just between the Puget Sound and the North Cascade mountain range. Mentored by a family with an affliction for outdoor recreation, her love affair with the outdoors started at an early age. Whether it was snowboarding, wakeboarding, mountain biking, windsurfing, hiking, rock climbing or even just climbing a tree, every free moment of hers was spent outside, exploring the gifts of the Northwest.
After graduating early with a B.A. in Environmental Economics, and feeling uncertain as to a satisfying career path, Colleen accepted a job managing a local kiteboard shop. Then following a two-year introduction to the kiteboard industry, she couldn’t wait to travel to some of the best kiteboarding spots in the world.
Colleen was hooked. So she then moved to Hood River, Oregon, the epicenter of kiteboarding in the NW, but found that she needed to explore further. So as fall came near, she headed off with her older brother to discover the NE coastline of Brazil. And with the help of her amazing sponsors, she hasn’t stopped since.

The waters in the area are amazingly calm all-year-round, which when combined with the steady winds, provides a fast, yet smooth ride. The winds are at their strongest from October to May, where the conditions at La Ventana are perfect for kite-boarding. In fact, this destination is now famous for it.
