Tourism in Cabo San Lucas: A Post-Pandemic Revival

Aerial view of Cabo San Lucas showcasing vibrant tourism and scenic coastal landscapes.

In today’s episode of The Nick Fong Podcast, Nick Fong, the founder and broker of Ronival Real Estate and Property Management, is joined by Rodrigo Esponda.  Rodrigo understands tourism in Cabo better than anyone else, as he’s the director of the Los Cabos Tourism Board.  What a treat to get the inside information from the source.

Together, Nick and Rodrigo discuss what has happened in recent months and how tourism has been recovering after the pandemic.  As you’ll see, the figures will surprise you.  Therefore, continue reading to uncover more about how Cabo is recovering and what to expect.

Nick Fong’s previous conversation with Rodrigo

In their previous meeting, Rodrigo revealed to Nick that the Los Cabos International Airport and most of the resorts will provide COVID-19 viral testing, right on site.  Also, he revealed that many of the Real Estate Agents and Property Managers in Cabo will be providing that service as well.

During that video, Nick Fong states that many of his clients happen to be doctors.  As such, he asks Rodrigo to see if those doctors can perform their own COVID-19 viral test.  Rodrigo responds with a yes.  He says that  they can.  But of course, they have to be qualified to perform the test and document it properly.

The approximate cost of COVID-19 viral testing is about $35 USD, which is about 700 Mexican Pesos.  Also, as this testing kicks into high gear after January 26, 2021, the cost is predicted to go down as the testing ramps up.  Interestingly, Rodrigo tells Nick that many hotels in Los Cabos provide the testing as part of their rate.

The latest news about the Los Cabos’ pandemic recovery

In the video, Rodrigo calls the pandemic recovery a “home run.”  He says that they implemented COVID testing at every property in Los Cabos.  So when you are at your hotel, you can get tested right there.  How convenient indeed!  Rodrigo says that level of service isn’t offered at any other destination.

Regarding tourism, Rodrigo says that Los Cabos has had the most successful summer EVER.  The numbers compared to 2019 – before the pandemic, were like this:  May was up 10%, June was up 20%, July was up 25%, and August was up 20%.  What a recovery!  And that’s amazing since 2019 was a record year.

One factor that has made both residents and visitors feel safe in Cabo has been the ability to eat outside.  They have been able to eat out on the patio of restaurants in the open air.  Of course, the air inside is just fine, but there’s nothing quite like the fresh Cabo ocean air outside.  Also, there are all of the other health accommodations provided by Cabo restaurants and the waiters, which make you feel very safe too

Visitors report that after landing at the Los Cabos International Airport, they have felt very safe everywhere they go.  For example, during your shuttle ride to town, drivers wear a face mask and they offer you hand sanitizer before entering.  Then, visitors mention that their accommodations are always very clean.  Also, they mentioned that all of the restaurants they’ve visited were very clean and safe – they take everyone’s temperature as they enter the establishment along with providing hand sanitizer.  Finally, even at the beaches, temperatures are taken as people enter the area.
