Palmilla is not a community that markets itself. It does not need to. Established in 1956 by Don Abelardo L. “Rod” Rodríguez — son of former Mexican President Abelardo L. Rodríguez — the original Hotel Palmilla was the very first luxury hospitality address in Los Cabos, drawing a generation of Hollywood icons, industrialists, and old-world Mexican families to a stretch of coast that, at the time, had no paved roads.
The 900-acre master plan unfolds along the southern slope of the Sierra de la Laguna, where the desert meets the calm, turquoise waters of the Sea of Cortez. Unlike the dramatic Pacific cliffs of Pedregal, Palmilla’s landscape is gentler — rolling fairways, mature palms planted in the 1960s, and bougainvillea-draped lanes leading to one of the few naturally swimmable beaches on the corridor. Seven decades later, the cobblestoned drives, the white-stuccoed chapel, and the families who returned year after year remain the soul of the place.
Today, Palmilla is anchored by the One&Only Palmilla resort and the 27-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course inaugurated in 1992 — the first of its kind in Latin America.
