How to Become a Mexican Resident
You can become a Mexican resident if you fulfill one of the following conditions:
- You have close family relations in Mexico
- You have found a job in Mexico
- You intend to retire in Mexico
- You start studying at a Mexican educational institution
- You have amassed at least four years of temporary residence and now qualify for permanent residence
As a foreign citizen, you’ll typically receive a Temporary Resident Card first (valid one year, renewable up to four years) before becoming eligible for permanent residence — though depending on your case, you may qualify for permanent residence from the start.
Who Is Eligible for the Permanent Resident Card?
You are eligible for a Mexico Permanent Resident Card if you fulfill one of the following requirements:
- You are retired and intend to live in Mexico permanently without employment/income from Mexico (Mexico Retirement Visa)
- You have a child, parent, step-parent, or sibling who is a Mexican citizen or permanent resident
- You have lived in Mexico for at least four years with a Temporary Resident Card
- You have lived in Mexico for at least two years with a Temporary Resident Card issued on the grounds of marriage to a Mexican citizen or permanent resident
Temporary vs. Permanent Residence
Temporary Resident Card
Issued if you find employment, want to join a family member who is a temporary resident, or start studying in Mexico. Within 30 days of arriving, you must exchange the visa for a Temporary Resident Card at the National Immigration Institute (INM). After four years on this card, you become eligible for permanent residency.
Permanent Resident Card
Gives holders rights similar to a Mexican citizen (excluding voting). Once your Permanent Resident Visa is approved, you must convert it into the Card within 30 days of arriving in Mexico at the National Immigration Institute (INM) — it’s the Card, not the visa, that lets you live in Mexico long-term.
How to Apply for the Permanent Resident Visa
Apply at a Mexican embassy in your country before traveling. The process:
- 1Contact an immigration attorney to help with the process.
- 2Contact a Mexico embassy to set up an appointment.
- 3Complete the Mexico Visa Application Form.
- 4Collect the required documents.
- 5Submit the application, pay the visa fee, and complete biometrics/interview on your appointment date.
- 6Wait for the visa to be processed.
- 7Pick up your passport with the approved visa affixed, then convert it into the Permanent Resident Card at the INM within 30 days of arriving in Mexico.
