Rancho Leonero’s history
The Baja peninsula in Mexico used to be a rugged, remote area. Cabo San Lucas started as a fishing village, few tourists knew about this place. It was only when wealthy sportsmen and travelers that would adventure to fly or drive down there that they’d fall in love with the place. Also, they returned with wild stories of the huge game they caught there. As such Gil Powell was one of these hearty souls who fell in love with the area. He was a wildlife cinematographer and around 1950 he found and purchased a 300-acre piece of paradise. This place is located beachfront on East Cape. This famous cinematographer was normally working in Africa recording the wildlife there and it’s because of this that the locals gave him the “El Leonero” nickname, which roughly translates to “The lion man“. This is the origin of the ranch’s name.

Jacque Cousteau once called the Sea of Cortez “The World’s Aquarium,” due to its great biodiversity. It is the most biologically diverse body of water on Earth. To explain, it supports over 900 varieties of fish. And, it supports more than 2,000 species of marine invertebrates. Finally, It’s home to many endemic species, which are creatures that only exist there, and nowhere else on Earth.
There, you’ll find many sea creatures, the largest of which are the migratory whales. These whales include humpback whales, California gray wales, and even killer whales.
