Sea of Cortez whale watching

These giant creatures arrive in the Sea of Cortez in December and stay around to bread until March. To elaborate a bit on the whale migration, they feed and grow in the cold waters of the Arctic sea during summer months.  Then, they migrate down to Baja California where they mate and nurse their young.  Then in the spring, the whales head north, once again.  But before they leave, they offer you the unique experience to see them in their natural habitat.

When you visit Loreto in the winter, you can see blue whales, humpback whales, and orcas spending time in Loreto Bay.  The most popular whale-watching tours take you to see the gigantic blue whales, which are the largest mammals on Earth.

Loreto has a rich history

First founded back in 1697, its original mission in town is called “Mission of Our Lady.”  This amazing structure is considered the “head” and the “mother” of all missions located on the 1000-mile long Baja peninsula.  Mission of Our Lady was the original spot where the Jesuits came to evangelize this new Spanish territory.  Interestingly, the Baja California peninsula was thought to be an island back then.  And, once they determined it’s a peninsula, another 100 years passed before updated maps were completely dispersed.
